Communication between service providers and service users in public sector settings is often shaped by context-specific needs, protocols, techniques, and frameworks that influence how linguistic and interactional dynamics unfold. When speakers involved in such interactions do not share a language and an interpreter is involved to facilitate mutual understanding, core aspects of communication dynamics are deeply altered, such as participation frameworks, power negotiations, management of turns, expression of emotions as well as the assertion of communicative rights. The three presentations in this panel explore how context-specific communicative dynamics unfold in police and mental health settings. Dr. Eloísa Monteoliva-García (HWU) will present the findings of her study (2017) on the stand-by mode of interpreting and the underlying negotiation of the interpreter’s role and her participation in authentic police interviews with suspects who have bilingual skills and switch between languages. Dr. Natalia Rodríguez-Vicente (HWU, University of Essex) will provide some insights about the application of interactional pragmatics notions to the study of interpreter-mediated interactions in a mental health context, drawing on the learning from her doctoral studies (2021). Dr. María Gómez-Bedoya (University of East Anglia) will explore how trainee interpreters deal with rapport-building features in interpreter-mediated police interviews with victims in the United Kingdom and Spain, presenting the findings from her PhD research (2022). Although the three studies are set in different contexts, they contribute complementary perspectives on a common line of inquiry: the challenges and opportunities involved in interpreters’ inter-linguistic and cultural mediation functions.
